Calypso bulbosa

A dainty and very rare Orchid from all sides

Each plant has one flower and one leaf. It grows in wet mossy places in undisturbed coniferous forests. The small tuber is loosely anchored in the ground by a few thread-like roots which maintain an association with specific species of fungus.
The showy flowers bloom only a short time, usually for two weeks. In our reserve you will find them in mid May.

If you try to transplant this beauty, it will die, deprived of the fungi it depends on. Photographers and admirers: do be careful where you step - the delicate roots and tubers of Calypso do not survive trampling!

The closest relation of Calypso bulbosa seems to be the African Eulophia orchid.
